Weight Loss: Adults Can Lose Weight As Young People With Dietary Changes |
Obesity is a major cause for concern as it has become a global epidemic. Not just young adults, people of all ages, including children, suffering from obesity, which can lead to many health problems including diabetes and heart disease.
It is commonly believed that as you get older, your metabolism slows down and your weight loss will become more difficult. To dispel this notion, recent studies indicate that overweight people who are over 60 may lose weight at the same time as young people!
Researchers at the Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (WISDEM) at UHCW suggest that age is no barrier when it comes to weight loss. Adults can lose equal weight as young people only use lifestyle changes.
Leading author Dr. Thomas Barber of Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick said: "Weight loss is important at any time. There are many reasons why people can lose weight in older people. which reduces weight loss through increased diet and exercise. "
In this study, 242 patients attended a WISDEM-based obesity service between 2005 and 2016. Two groups were formed - one with people under the age of 60 and the other with people between the ages of 60 and 78. The program utilized lifestyle-based changes that focused on changes in diet, psychological support and exercise promotion.
After the study, those aged 60 and over on average reduced their weight by 7.3% compared to weight loss by 6.9% for those under 60 years of age. Both groups used the same time within the obesity service, on average 33.6 months of those 60 years and older, and 41.5 months of those under 60 years of age.
"Age should not be a barrier to the management of obesity. Rather than imposing barriers on older people who are undergoing weight loss programs, we must work with that process.
