Settled in China during the Han dynasty, Mulan follows Hua Mulan, a rebellious young woman who disguises herself as a man and enlists in the Armed Forces to fight the Huns, the northern invaders, so that her sick father is not needed as part of the conscription.

While it is basically the same story, the real and the redesigned are very different. Here are five different differences between these two films.

No songs

Like many Disney animated movies, the first one in 1998 was music and had many songs during its performance. There’s a song called “Loyal Brave True” on the credits, though, and there are instrumental versions of the original songs during the film.

No Mushu

There is no Mushu in Live-action Mulan. The film is based on a lesser one, which had the elements of dreams, so Mushu (memorized by Eddie Murphy), a young Chinese dragon, had to leave.

Mulan does not cut his hair

The original film had a memorable scene where Mulan went about robbing his father’s weapons and his sword and wearing his hair to make himself a man. The live action version does not have that event. She's got long hair, just tied up. And on the other hand, he lets it loose and flows brilliantly, as if accepting what he is.

Little jokes

The active form of Mulan is very sensitive, and sadly loses real humor.

No cricket

Droll animated characters would not have entered Mulan live action. And Cricket is another form of damage to this tone and method. Instead he is the man of the man in this film.
